The stories in this anthology speak of the love between First Nations peoples and their countries. They are personal accounts that share knowledge, insight and emotion, each speaking of a deep connection to country and of feeling heartsick because of the harm that is being inflicted on country even today, through the logging of old growth forests, converting millions of acres of land to salt fields, destruction of ancient rock art and significant sacred sites, and a record of species extinction that is the worst in the world.
Tjalaminu Mia is a Noongar woman with bloodline links to the Minang and Goreng peoples of the south-west of Western Australia. She was a research fellow in Oral History and the Arts in the School of Indigenous Studies at the University of Western Australia, and is now the CEO of the Sister Kate’s Home Kids Aboriginal Corporation, a Stolen Generations organisation.
Blaze Kwaymullina worked with Sally Morgan at the Centre for Indigenous History and the Arts at the University of Western Australia and co-edited Speaking from the Heart and Heartsick for Country.
Sally Morgan was born in Perth, in 1951. She has published books for both adults and children, including her acclaimed autobiography, My Place. She has also established a national reputation as an artist and has works in many private and public collections.
