This is on East Kimberley country. The land of the Kija people.
I paint this place because my dad was raised by his uncle from Kija country. His name was Hector Jarndange and took my dad around this country and he put my dad through ceremony. Dad spent most of his teenage life with his uncle at an old homestead called Texas Downs.
The other story with Purnululu is how it came to be what it is today. My elder skinship brother whose name is Patrick Mung told me a story about Purnululu, that in the dreamtime there was a fight between two flying foxes. They fought and fought for a very long time.
The battles took place in the skies and beneath the ground. As they were fighting underneath the ground, they were pushing up all these rocks from beneath. This created Purnululu.
Today this is one of the main tourist attractions in Australia.
As you make your way into the cathedral gorge, which is in the centre of Purnululu you will see this magnificent site and this site was a birthing and a gathering place.
Before you enter this place on the left-hand side you will see these two rock formations which resemble the two flying foxes.
